Ing is a tropical evergreen shrub that can reach a height of 6-7m. It is native of South America, Mexico: South Asia, the Caribbean and tropical areas of Latin America. Cultivated as an ornamental plant, was also imported in Asia, Polynesia and Malaysia, and may be found in southern Florida, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Ment contains many active chemicals including flavonoids, sesquiterpeni, monoterpene, heterocyclic, fenilpropanoidi, alkaloids and benzenoidi. A group of phyto-chemical called chromene elements that were found in the leaves have shown toxic effects on cancer cells and bacteria. Other phyto-chemical elements, including a group of bezenoidi, have also shown antibacterial and cytotoxic activities. Ment also contains safrole, a phyto-chemical that has been successfully used in insecticides, fragrances, soaps and detergents.
Ing revealed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial action which helps to explain his long history of use for many types of infections and infectious diseases. In some laboratory studies, the leaves of matico and essential oil derived from the leaves or fruit showed antibacterial action against gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative. He was also documented that matico is active against fungi and yeasts. In addition, a group of French researchers reported the antiviral action of matico against polio virus.
Another study focused on the study of ing as a possible treatment for a disorder called topical leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease that is spread through the bite of phlebotomy (insect like a fly). The most common forms of leishmaniasis are the skin, which causes skin sores, and visceral, which affects some internal organs (eg spleen, liver or bone marrow). In two studies, matico has shown the ability to kill the parasite or to cure the disease. Another disease of the skin is pretty unpleasant schistosomiasis. It is a parasitic disease spread by water snails which are found in many rivers and waterways in the Amazon forest. Numerous studies have documented the action of a molluscicide matico against snails and the parasite that carry with them. Have also been reported insecticidal action against the mosquito that carries and spreads yellow fever.
In herbal medicine systems in South America: matico is quite well known and considered a useful remedy for healing wounds and many other disorders. It is widely used as a remedy for all types of digestive problems like stomach pain, vomiting, dyspepsia, diarrhea, stomach ulcers, intestinal gas and even stomach cancer. It is also considered an excellent tonic for the genitourinary apparatus and is used for kidney stones, urinary tract infections, cystitis, urethritis, leucorrhea, vaginitis and various venereal diseases like gonorrhea or thricomonas. Moreover, it is used for many upper respiratory disorders such as bronchitis, pulmonary hemorrhage, pleurisy, pneumonia, colds and flu, tonsillitis and sore throat.
The name derives from Spanish matico ancient South American legend. It is assumed that the plant had been discovered by a wounded Spanish soldier named Matic. He learned (probably from India) that applying the leaves of the plant on the bleeding wound is blocked, and the plant began to be named matico or grass or tree of the soldier. It was introduced as an astringent for wounds in the United States and Europe by a doctor in Liverpool in 1839. From the first U.S. medical test, ing was also recommended for leucorrhea, gonorrhea, hemorrhoids, blenorragia, dyspepsia, internal hemorrhage (lung, stomach ulcers, postpartum hemorrhage), as well as diarrhea, dysentery and cholera.
